Low/Vibracathedral Orchestra split 7"
SongsLow – David & Jude ReviewsLeeds' Vibracathedral Orchestra take your hand and deliver you to some squalling post-rock nightmare. One the flip, Low beckon you to the sweetest sleep you've ever experienced with a trademark velvet-lined lullaby. A bi-polar treat. SC David & Jude/Stole Some Sentimental Jewellery is a split single that pairs Low's spare Country gospel with Vibracathedral Orchestra's kinetic instrumentals. "David & Jude" is nice enough, with Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker's twinned vocals hovering right behind the speakers while a dry, tactile guitar is thumbed in the distrance. Recorded by K Records' Calvin Johnson at the Dub Narcotic studios in Olympia, the atmosphere of hayseed catatonia is only slightly marred by Johnson's inappropriately clumsy interventions on melodica. "Stole Some Sentimental Jewellery" sees Vibracathedral's one–time wind tunnel sound beautifully upgraded to 24–track glory via engineer Richard Formby (a one–time member of Spacemen 3 and Spectrum). It sounds like a high energy drone on Fairport Convention's "Matty Groves7quot;, with a swarm of Swarbrick–styled violin levitating the entire orchestra and ranks as one of their finest entries to date. DK Another new label to me is Leeds based Misplaced Music and by the sounds on this wonderful 7" and the promised future release schedule on the printed insert, a prosperous existence is on the cards for them. Low go head to head with the Vibracathedral Orchestra on this debut split. Low certainly need no introduction, and if they do, where have you been these last few years. An enticing pairing, that sees Low's slightness acting as antidote to Vibracathedral's swirling drones. Low play it cute on 'David and Jude.' Recorded at the Dub Narcotic Sound System, this momentary piece of calm really does impart a longing need for you to put everything down, to stop what your doing, empty your head of the days woes and pack your emotions into the safety of Low's caress. Sounding like the kind of thing you'd gently strum on the back porch with the evening sun ablaze as decoration, achingly fragile at the very least. Vibracathedral Orchestra on the other hand have no intention of making it a fey affair. 'Stole some sentimental jewellery' is a brooding claustrophobic affair, the maddening drone effects throughout with it's sense of Eastern promise, sounds like Echoboy vying with Muslim Gauze while Velvet Underground deconstruct 'A day in the life'. An essential purchase. While your there grab a copy of their split with Jackie O Motherfucker on Textile Vynile Records, haven't seen or heard it yet but based on this showing, gotta be worth the investment.
